Andy Warhol is a character from a book he wrote about himself, an enigma who's human but also is not but also is? Your hosts have a hard time making up our minds about this marketer turned artist and we express those thoughts very loudly and brashly, as you would expect from us. So join us as we talk about his best times and his worst times, his prints and his plagiarism, and most of all, the role he played to shape the capitalist art world hellscape that we live in now.</image:title>

As you can imagine, BYWAP is very pro "Not-Starving Artist." Enter: Funding. <image:caption>We did a whole episode on this topic, and I still don’t believe it’s spelt that way when I read “Ziggurat”. But, like many words that look weird after reading it so many times, today we are back in our fascination wheelhouse of temple-complexes and ancient civilizations. Follow BYWAP as we travel back in time to investigate the Ziggurat as a religious center for Mesopotamian cities… And the global influence it may very well possess! Join us as we yell into the void over the importance of Big Rivers, manage to fill our “We Hate Alexander the Great” quota, contemplate the trading significance of an empire with so many trade routes, FINALLY record the episode, and settle into Halloween Month the best way we know how… Ancient Civilizations. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 84: Ocean’s 8 (Movie Night!)</image:title>
<image:caption>What a delightfully ridiculous movie - the plot is spotty, but the laughs are real. Today your BYWAP favorites are conquering the 2018 trainwreck that was Ocean’s 8. A starcast of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, and Helena Bonham Carter could not rescue Gary Ross’ film, but God bless ‘em. Will Debbie Ocean pull off the greatest heist of her life? Will she make her character relevant with her impossible group of hyper-talented thieves? Of course! We don’t have friends, we have family!... Oh, wait, sorry, wrong movie. Join us as we girlboss-gatekeep-gaslight our way to millions of dollars, critique Met Gala fashion, realize that all it takes to touch priceless art is to speak flawless french, and conspire that Danny Ocean is actually not dead. <image:caption>Guess who’s back? Back again. With all the power of life, love, and drama, we cannot stay away from talking about our spicy favorites… And Caravaggio is the epitome of the sunglasses emoji. The 16th century bad boy of your art history class, queer influencer Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is the Baroque Italian painter who spurred controversy and loyal followers. His work is exquisite, his capability for murder is strong. Cringe aside, this artist lived a wild life. We’re unhinged in this episode, and you’re welcome. Join us as we wish to go drinking with Caravaggio, contemplate how a bunch of Maltan monks could possibly stand to be around this temper-tantrum baby, obsess over the fear of being beheaded by making a ton of art around beheadings, and enjoy as we become a True Crime podcast to discuss the mysterious death and disappearance of Caravaggio’s body! <image:caption>Scream into the void! We’re back, baybee. Vacation was lovely, Elene is in a great way, Steph needs sleep. Delirious and over-caffeinated, we are in the proper headspace to try and learn you about Dada. Will we be successful? Probably not! Join BYWAP for this picnic of lucid dreaming and furry teacups. We’ll automatic writing our way to success, and talk about Marcel Duchamp a lot. Find out how Dada came to be in 20th century Paris; contemplate quietly the art that you could create if you did a lot of deep breathing, randomly rubbed graphite on random pieces of paper, and scream; and, remain unsurprised that anarchists and communists co-signed their beliefs into an art style that had no gods nor kings. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 81: Taj Mahal: A Legacy of Love</image:title>
<image:caption>What a life, what a joy. We are back in our sweet spot, where UNESCO World Heritage sites find themselves back in our limelight, and we can talk about architecture. And, not only architecture, but also a love story that has inspired generations for centuries, though there might be more to the story than we’re usually told. Today, your favorite BYWAP hosts talk about one of the seven Wonders of the World—the Taj Mahal. Join us as we demand for a healthy respect for the dead, make really bad MTV “Cribz” jokes, gossip about the lives of rich people, and wish that there was an Obsidian Taj Mahal. Things have changed, but we're changing with it. Donate. Sign petitions. Support Black-owned businesses. Challenge racism. Educate yourselves. Listen. Speak. Repatriate. Stay Safe. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 80: The Sunken Treasures of Ancient Egypt</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s like Atlantis, but better! Today we tell the story of Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus — two lost cities at the mouth of the Nile, swallowed completely by the sea by the 8th century AD. As we continue the last of our Summer Extravaganza, Stephanie teaches Elene about the remarkable story and legacy of ancient cities that only recently saw the light of day… But that contributes to our larger understanding of Ancient Egypt. Join us as we tell the story of Osiris, get mad as we discuss the French, learn so much about culture and religion from some stele, and contemplate how we get into the field of Marine Archeology without having to go back for another Masters degree. <image:caption>What if your technical abilities as an artist were so good, you could bamboozle art markets and curators? What does it take? How do you get into it? Just… Asking for a friend, of course! Anyways, as a part of our summer extravaganza today Elene teaches Stephanie about the Johns—John Drewe and John Myatt, to be exact. This modern story is fun, bite-sized, and full of intense art historical implications. Join us as we follow an extravagant narrative from our favorite BYWAP host, get mad about what is within the purview of fake physics professors, contemplate the lingering effects of the Myatt art market, and enjoy this episode with a summery refreshment! <image:caption>To all the wives out there: if your husband takes credit for your work, leave! BYWAP is back with a movie night adventure. We’ve taken a small break from our Night at the Museum binge to watch this 2014 gem: Big Eyes. Shockingly, neither Helena Bonham Carter nor Johnny Depp are in this Tim Burton vehicle, but Amy Adams and Christopher Waltz do an amazing job conveying the TRUE STORY of Margaret and Walter Keane. Join us as we fantasize about running away to Hawaii, watch in horror as art forgeries get bought and sold with reckless abandon, celebrate when the truth is finally revealed, have a paint-off in court, and wish that this movie was two hours shorter than what it actually was. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 77: Modernity and the Spaces of Femininity</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re back in Paris, mes amis! Grab your walking sticks and top hats, and join us on this stroll through the evolving Modern Art Scene as a passive observer of the world…! Unless, of course, you’re a woman. In which case, we regret to inform you that there is no art historically equivalent word for feminine casual street voyeur. We can offer “girlfriend/wife” of male counterpart, or sex worker? However, if those do not appeal to you this day, we have some cozier, homebound options for you! Yes, no, these still apply even if you’re a “woman artist” as well. If you have any questions about your lot in life, please refer to Griselda Pollock’s chapter “Modernity and the Spaces of Femininity.” Thank you! Join us as we investigate art spaces and feminine places, marvel at how bizarrely attached people become to the presumed nature of gendered language, get really excited about our new favorite author, and quandary over how the “virgin” and the “harlot” will forever be at the heart of discussing a woman’s role in life. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 76: SAMO IS DEAD: Long Live Basquiat</image:title>
<image:caption>There are no words to describe how important New York was to the 80’s Art Scene. Not only did you have money and culture, but everyone seemed to be caught up in a movement of raw, expressive, heavily commercial creation. And it’s in this scene where we find today’s artist, New York’s very own: Jean-Michel Basquiat. And this ain’t your SAMO, SAMO. We mourn the man we lost, and wish that someone could have looked at him like a human-being in need of a friend and not a factory capable of printing masterpieces. Join us as we contemplate the double-edged sword of success, become acutely interested in joining the punk movement through spray painting, offer unaccredited medical advice to a boy who lived too fast and died too young, and briefly live in a world where offering a postcard to Andy Warhol could change your life. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 75: What Is A Pyramid?</image:title>
<image:caption>What's got four walls, wasn't built by aliens, and has been a fascination for centuries longer than we can even perceive time? That's right: Pyramids! This is largely a Giza/ancient Egypt focused episode, but the world of Pyramids is so much larger than we can even begin to theorize. Join us as we investigate the generational wealth necessary to maintain a Pyramid Scheme, enjoy knowing that the stars helped build these lasting monuments, be perplexed that Earth, Wind, and Fire probably have the best understanding of Egyptian aesthetics, and get into a philosophical debate on how much labor was was paid/unpaid for this public works project. Your favorite BYWAP hosts are pulling out all the stops with today's Article Discussion as we dive deeply into a love letter to the hallowed halls of stored memories. Archives, especially photographs as both archival material and The Archive, have a lot to teach us about what we see, how we feel, and why we remember. Your favorite BYWAP hosts get Romantic:tm: and Wistful:tm: as they think about the idyllic French countryside, and how we wish more than anything to cozy up on a picnic together and paint impressionistic landscapes. Our gloomy host Claude Monet sits alongside us, working on six hundred canvases at once because the light keeps changing. Honestly, this is such a peaceful episode if you can look past ALL of our French pronunciation. We really do try... We promise. Join us as we cry over the summer holiday we crave to be on, get excited over Claude Monet being a speed demon, bash on The Royal French Salon, and we sing the legacy of a salty old painter and his pursuit of capturing the essence of water lilies. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 70: The French Art Academy: History & Controversy</image:title>
<image:caption>Let the spicy topics continue! Many of us are introduced to the concept of "The French Academy" when we begin studying art and art history, but what actually is it? Was it just a building that people could go and study at, or did it transcend a physical space and become a highly influential cultural representative? Follow your favorite BYWAP hosts as we take a sojourn to France and take a critical look into the history and controversies of such a lasting monolith. Join us as we butcher the French language, get surprisingly heated over the Hierarchy of Painting, make apt 21st century connections to their 17th century historical counterparts, and remind folks that the last thing you need to worry about is what some dumb art school tells you is art versus not art. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 69: Frank Lloyd Wright</image:title>
<image:caption>Listen, we couldn't plan for this level of coincidence if we tried. Episode 69 and Frank Lloyd Wright? It's almost too gauche, even for us. But, then again, we did accidentally record this particular episode on his birthday... So, maybe we did know?? (We didn't. I'm obsessed). Architecture is our bread and butter, and this self-proclaimed greatest architect of all-time is our sworn enemy. Join us as we investigate Frank Lloyd Wright's obsession with mystics and Welsh magicians, get personally offended that an architect built an entire career around leaky roofs and he's still considered great(!!!), keep a running list on how easy it was to just abandon your family, and listen to Stephanie get ideas for when she starts her own commune/cult in Arizona. Things have changed, but we're changing with it. Donate. Sign petitions. Support Black-owned businesses. Challenge racism. Educate yourselves. Listen. Speak. Repatriate. Stay Safe. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 68: Goya’s Ghosts (Movie Night!)</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s that time of rotations where Elene and Stephanie have movie night! Most times we just curl up around a nice film, pop some popcorn, and enjoy some mindless fun. Other times, we suffer through a too-long, unnecessarily tragic film that depicts torture and suffering. Steph loved it, Elene was over it before it even began. Join us as we suffer through one of the bloodiest times in Spanish history, contemplate how little it would take to get ourselves arrested by the Inquisition, make a minimum of six Monty Python and listen to us suffer so you do not have to watch this bizarre film. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 67: Vanishing Points: Art Against AIDS</image:title>
<image:caption>Read our lips: Kissing Doesn't Kill. Greed and Indifference Do. We here at BYWAP have thought long and hard about how we wanted to celebrate PRIDE on our podcast. As two queer women, we acknowledge the celebration and trauma that comes from LGBTQI+ legacy. The first Pride was a riot, and this will be no different. In a joyful, tearful recounting of today's article, we implore you to take stock of how far we have come as a community, and how far we still have to go. Don't let June be the only month you embrace queer history. Learn the artists, say their names. Get Keith Haring tattooed on your arm, hang cut-outs of Robert Mapplethorpe on your wall, cry with Aziz + Cucher as they navigated the miracle of medical advancement, and make art to remember the loss of your loved ones like David Wojnarowicz. Remember, this isn't 'gay as in happy', this is 'queer as in no cops at PRIDE.' Our article for today is Vanishing Points: Art, AIDS, and the Problem of Visibility from Richard Meyer's book Outlaw Representation: Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century American Art (2002). Join us as we investigate the cultural climate of the American AIDS epidemic, denounce artistic censorship, listen to Stephanie nearly cry several times, ACT UP as we add our voices to the chants of Silence=Violence, and offer sympathetic hearts to the work and life of artists like David Wojnarowicz. Things have changed, but we're changing with it. Donate. Sign petitions. Support Black-owned businesses. Challenge racism. Educate yourselves. Listen. Speak. Repatriate. Stay Safe. <image:caption>Sometimes we talk about some of the most interesting artists. And sometimes we discuss captivating architecture. But today, my friends, we’re doing something... Different. We’re looking at both of these things as if we didn’t care about these things. And, doubly so, we’re going to do our first museum deep dive! Join us as we talk about the Museum of Old and New Art! Join us as we discuss the unique experience of rating art in terms of “love” or “hate”, contemplate betting on horse races to get rich quick, listen to Elene be horrified at the idea of a man’s job being living artwork, and celebrate accessible art to local communities. And the format is new, too! Today Elene teaches Stephanie about Georgian artist and Sad Boy, Shalva Kikodze. Join us as we follow a man in search of a country, continue to romanticize about running away to Paris to become great artists, phonics our way through the pronunciation of Tbilisi, and learn so much more about or favorite Georgian co-host! <image:caption>It’s a holiday in Cambodia, and the star of today’s show is the world’s largest religious structure—Angkor Wat. So, what can ya do? Join us as we contemplate starting our own rice kingdom, enthuse about STEM like it’s Witchcraft, and reaffirm our favorite talking points about medieval civilizations. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 62: What is Abstract Expressionism?</image:title>
<image:caption>From Rothko to Pollock, the forms and shapes of abstract expressionism are known instantly. This post-WWII art movement has defined a corner stone of the Modern art movement and decorates wall-upon-wall of gallery space in museums... But what is it? Where did it come from? Where did it go? Like all good things, the art evolves throughout it's time and your favorite BYWAP hosts are here to guide you through this rich, colorful darkness. Don't worry, it'll make sense when we make it to the other side. Join us as we yell about the Cold War, roll our eyes at artists nursing blossoming God complexes as they explain their art, get heated over the influence of Peggy Guggenheim, and return attention to some of the coolest women artists we've covered in this podcast. <image:caption>What speaks more to culture and personal identity than hair? How does a flag made for division and strife persevere to be made into art? Today, your favorite hosts dive deep into the illustrious story of Sonya Clark and investigate cultural identity. Join us as we continue to unravel the Black American narrative, one confederate flag at a time; contemplate the many thousands of combs that make up some Sonya Clark installations; beg your hosts to stop with the musical segways; and, delight in how cool it would be to have Sonya Clark as a professor. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 60: Benin Bronzes: History as Loot</image:title>
<image:caption>Have you heard the good news? The Benin Bronzes are to be repatriated! Oh, what a wonderful time to be a part of the cultural heritage scene! Whilst the United Kingdom and commonwealth nations mourn the loss of the Queen’s Consort Prince Philip, the wheels of change and progress are seeing restitution and justice be enacted on these national treasures. What are these Benin Bronzes? Why do they matter? We’ve got you. Join us as we dive deep into the history of the bronzes, celebrate a ‘monumental’ victory in the world of looted goods, and contemplate the fate of so many other spoils of war (and colonialism). <image:title>Episodes - Episode 59: Paradise on Earth: Alcazar Gardens</image:title>
<image:caption>Ramadan Mubarak to all our Muslim fans and friends! May you all have a month of peace and joy! Today, we're finally talking about Spain. But, more importantly, we're talking about the Royal Alcazar Palace and Gardens and the legacy of 700 years of Islamic art on Spanish culture with an article discussion. This World Heritage Site, palace of Spain’s royal family, and done in the Mudéjar architectural style, will play the backdrop of today’s episode. So, sit back. We’ll enjoy the soft splashing of fountains, as we sit in the cool shade of the patio, and get ready for our article discussions of Hispano-Arab gardens. Our two articles for today: The Hispano-Arab Garden: Its Philosophy and Function by James Dickie (1968) and Primero Huerto: Iconography, Anamorphism, and the Idea of the Garden in Sixteenth-Century Spanish Mysticism by María M. Carrión (2012). Join us as we make a ton of Game of Thrones references, wax poetically about flowers, get defensive of scholarly literature written in the 15th century, and contemplate the legacy of Islam on the Spanish diaspora. Built around the legacy of David Driskell (renowned professor, artist, and curator) and his revolutionary exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art (1976) this HBO documentary opens audiences to the beauty and reality of what it means to be a Black American Artist. We have Silvija back on the podcast a year after our first COVID-19 update for our second Art World Shenanigan's episode! To no one's surprise... It's still kinda bad. And that's not even an April Fool's Day joke! But, we're here. And we're queer. And we enjoy a beer in this "relaxed-fit" style recap episode of what the past twelve months have meant to us. It's all Chaotic, all the time. Join us for some wholesome friendship, COVID-19 discussions, bad Suez Canal jokes, 2020 mentions, and the hangups of colonization. <image:caption>Oh, folks. What an episode. It took your favorite hosts 3+ attempts to actually come out with an episode this week, because we kept getting tripped up over the subject, the content, the execution... You get the picture. We really liked how today's discussion on the depiction of Motherhood in West African Art turned out, but it took us a long time to get it to here. Join us as we yell about things we care about, derail this thought train by getting lost in the weeds on who gets to decide what is Art and what is Artifact, discuss if the sources used for today's episode were the correct sources, and watch two Art History Students with a deep passion for equity and representation struggle in real time. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 55: Ruth Asawa: Inside Out</image:title>
<image:caption>Oh boy, dear listener. Silence is violence, and the patterns of racial violence that predicate the notion of Asian Americans as "not belonging" directly ties to US history. Look no further than today's artist, Ruth Asawa, who was forcibly detained in a WWII Japanese Internment camp on US soil. This American sculptor took her lifelong passion for art and her outstanding resilience, and radically transformed wire-crocheting baskets into something extraordinary and bizarre. After all, it was Ruth herself who said, "I would not be who I am today had it not been for the internment, and I like who I am." Join us as we discuss the atrocities of racism, gush about the Black Mountain College, celebrate the concept of true love, and make a ton of noise around the fact that her arts education space inspires both of your BYWAP hosts to start a school together. <image:caption>Let's start at the very beginning, it's a very good place to start. To talk about printmaking, we must return to the humble beginnings. After all, we live in an era (we live in a society!) where access to paper and printing is commonplace. We here at BYWAP invite you to join us for a fun dive through all the ways artists have mastered and manipulated ink on paper! Join us as we marvel at industrialization and the printing press; express outward concern and horror for all the ways artists use dangerous substances to make pretty art; scream about the many, many, many, many, many, MANY lines it takes to make prints; and, take refuge in the knowledge that we mad respect these crazy printmaking cats because they make collecting art a lot cheaper—Accessibility is good! <image:caption>This goes out to you and yours: BYWAP talks ancient desert architecture. Like all good things, this pre-historic Jordinian city of vibrant, carved sandstone was 'lost' to the Western world for hundreds of years. Petra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and, since then, this mysterious city has slowly unveiled its secrets to us. Sadly, there will be no Holy Grail or Ancient Knight found here... Unless! Join us as we marvel at the deeply human ability to divert water and earth to create civilization in places where people probably shouldn't live, gasp audibly when we turn the corner and the Treasury creeps into view, yell about the Indiana Jones franchise, and load our guns so we can shoot at carved architectural features for Treasure (pronounced TrAY-shure). <image:caption>Are portraits art? Portraiture is an old tradition, going back to at least ancient Egypt where it has flourished for the past 5,000 years. This week, however, BYWAP is all wrapped up in the historical romantic drama of Celine Sciamma's brilliant Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019). Not only was this movie specifically made for us, but it also opened up a whole conversation about portraits. Join us as we contemplate between running away to French islands, cry over the power of music in film, break down the philosophy of portraits, and thrill in Queer Delight over two equals falling in love. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 50: Artemisia Gentileschi</image:title>
<image:caption>The sun has not shown in three days, Steph is still dying of the plague, the global economy is unstably controlled by a small ruling class. In many ways, today is a perfect day to talk about Italian Baroque queen: Artemisia Gentileschi. Thanks to (extremely) recent art historical focus shifts, names like Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, and Artemisia Gentileschi are recognized in the Art History Canon as talented and remarkable artists. Artemisia, in her own right, possess a timelessness that makes her art so approachable now as it was back in the 17th century (gotta love #WomenWhoKill). But, this wasn't always the case. Join us as we investigate the life of the Gentileschi's, yell into the void about how art history ignored women artists for nearly forever, get gore-y about descriptions of Judith slaying Holofernes, and remain amazed that this podcast has officially made it to 50 episodes. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 49: Fertility Goddesses</image:title>
<image:caption>Happy February, someone let me off this ride. A lot of smart people have argued that prehistoric human societies were more matrifocal, more cooperative, and less violent. These same smart people also theorize that many (if not most) primitive societies featured a religion based around ideas of fertility and motherhood. While y’all may are not be here for gendered interpretations of what defines fertility, sex, pregnancy, childbirth, and crops, we here at BYWAP can assure you that this is one hell of a goddess roundup. Join us as we celebrate our queen, The Venus of Willendorf; yell about gender, and gendered language, and the limits of academic creativity for naming; stare in awe and terror at half of these hot girls who do hot shit; and appreciate the line “clearly depicted sexual attributes suggest that they are a direct or indirect expression of fertility” from archeologist Nicholas Conrad, who we dunk on for nearly this whole episode. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 48: What is Art Nouveau?</image:title>
<image:caption>Art is for Elves. Art Deco is for Dwarves. It really is that simple. Once called ‘the Modern Style’, Art Nouveau lived a hot and heavy moment before bowing down in the face of Modern Architecture. A pity, but a revival period is what we live for. Join us as we talk about the feelings that squiggly lines make us feel, argue the word choices Stephanie makes, get really passionate about French architecture, and make travel plans you can’t act upon for another two years. <image:caption>Happy birthday to our favorite Queen, Brooklyn's own Martyr (spelled like Martyr, pronounced like you're stupid), the fabulous co-host of Wigging Out podcast. Art and performance has suffered through the literal worst year in recent history. But in a historic new year, and with one of Steph's best friends from Undergrad, we look at queer spaces. Through decades underneath the banner and terror of HIV/AIDs, queer artists in New York have been fighting for representation and a voice. This is Queer Chaotic Activism at it's finest: you're welcome. Join us as we talk about the use of Christian iconography, setting the tone of Catholic Guilt, the archival process of remembering Queer History, the personal development of finding your own way in creative scenes, write the exhibition that remembers the Pandemic, and listening to Steph ask seven hundred questions. It's Fine:tm:. Find Martyr everywhere! @dragthemaryr on Twitter and Instagram, and read the incredible SIDEWALKKILLA editorial, Martyr: Where Was God When I Was Raped? <image:title>Episodes - Episode 46: Unpacking Indiana Jones (Movie Night!) - We watched Indiana Jones so you don't have to. What can be said about a bizarrely outdated movie series that capitalizes on the treasure hunting of acclaimed archeologists? It belongs in the trash. In this George Lucas creation, Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr—"Indiana" Jones, to all—is a tenured professor who fights Nazis and grades term-papers, traveling the world to collect rare, priceless artifacts to quell his own obsessions and fill his university's museum collection. Men will literally become fluent in the dialect and customs of a remote Himalayan tribe and retrieve sacred stones instead of going to therapy. Scared of snakes and not much else, join your BYWAP hosts as we get very loosey-goosey and yell about it all. Find out why "it belongs in a museum!" doesn't always dissuade your enemies; contemplate how a Near-Death Experience can help heal the rift between father and son; listen to Stephanie and Elene yell about the racist and glaring plot-holes that come about watching four movies over one weekend; and, groan in dismay knowing that we're still waiting on the fifth Indian Jones movie to be free from this hell.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 45: Graphic Design in Propaganda - So, when we sat down to record this episode last Tuesday, we thought we were being clever and productive with our time. These two art history nerds from the past could not have imagined that the same week they were going to record an episode about Propaganda there would be an attempted coup on the U.S Capitol building. The whole Trump Train Propaganda Machine was right there! And we didn't acknowledge it! Because we thought it would be kicking a dead horse. Instead, armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol during the middle of a global pandemic. Anyways. Find out how the US should get an honorary doctorate for being a propaganda machine; listen to two babies—oblivious of time and impending terrorism—talk about war and liberty; contemplate how aesthetic choices impact the subconscious better than we could have ever imagined; and, learn about the various symbols that have been used for hope and oppression for decades.</image:title>

However, before we dive into the new year, we here at BYWAP couldn’t help ourselves and we had to share some together to sing the praises and bemoan the tragedies of the incredible artist: Yayoi Kusama. Queen of polka dots and Master of Infinity (Rooms), she has been celebrated and praised in the contemporary for being an #instagramable artist.... but, she is so much more than that! Join us as we say goodbye to 2020 with hearts full of joy, contemplate how decades of trauma can affect the human condition, become obsessed with Kusama and her polka dots, and advocate for affordable and accessible mental health care.</image:title>

We've done COVID Updates several times this year (in April & August), and in the spirit of every 4 months, we'd like to give 2020 one last update to see where things are going. Thankfully, the news is a touch more promising on the virus-side of things with the roll-out of vaccines! However, there is always the darker side of these festivities and frolicking. Please stay safe. Find out how some museums are trying to use their collections to bankroll employees; contemplate briefly on how street art impacts the value of real estate; reflect of fabulous re-discoveries that make Art Historians wet; bemoan government neglect and abuse in so many of its forms; and not mention the monoliths popping over the world because it's just exhausting and we're tired and It's Just Art.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 41: An Adventure in Urban Conservation (w/ Tamro) - We live in a society: architecture edition. Your BYWAP hosts are back at it again, with domestic architecture expert Tamro, investigating the history of cities. When did people start to see the value in urban architecture, and when did conserving it become a priority? In today's episode, we dive into the foundation of the cities and places that make up daily life—but in an Architecture Nerd sort of way! Reminisce on how problematic the 20th century REALLY was; dive into the challenges that come about trying to preserve the past to keep it for the future; listen to two Georgians talk about Georgia (the country!); and, finally, contemplate how the Creative City and Modern City archetypes are just a continuation of centuries of Urban Conservation.</image:title>

What did you really expect? Join BYWAP for this mini picnic of lucid dreaming and furry teacups. Together, we'll explore the deeply troubling thoughts of artists like Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, and so many others—as well as take inspiration from the techniques they developed to make this uncanny art. Find out how Surrealism took root in 20th century Paris through the form of manifests and creative types; contemplate quietly the art that you could create if you did a lot of deep breathing, randomly rubbed graphite on random pieces of paper, and channeled your weirdest dreams; find joy in your hearts the way that the Sims brings joy to our hearts; remain unsurprised that anarchists and communists co-signed their beliefs into an art style that had no gods nor kings; and bring a Surrealist object and new wealth of Art Historical knowledge to your upcoming ZOOM family holiday group call. Care to join us in some weird art making? Using this list from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Unframed, pick a Surrealist technique and create something with it. Please take care of yourselves and donate to all groups that fight for Indigenous rights. It's movie night here in the BYWAP household, and, if you couldn't tell yet, your hosts are very dear fans of the late Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. This week, we watched the prettiest movies in the world, Loving Vincent (2017). Let us join Armand Roulin in his mission to deliver a letter, and fall down the rabbit hole of investigating the red-heads demise. It's so tender and sweet and beautiful—and a tight(ish) 90mins! It's a slow movie, perfect to enjoy with a slice of leftover pie. And a box of tissues. Find out how many times the hosts can gush about HAND-PAINTED FILM FRAMES, contemplate how close Elene is to writing her OWN movie about Vincent van Gogh, groan constantly over the suffering that van Gogh withstood in his short but painful life career, and find a way to stay awake in these days of total darkness as we sit through ANOTHER theory exploration of how Vincent died—as well as the Van Gogh Museum's Definitive Plot To Kill Vincent! Extra, Extra! Read all about it!</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 38: Why Have There Been No Great Transgender Artists? - We're coming for your throat, Linda! On a spicy (technically third part) response, BYWAP is back on our regular bullsh*t to talk about Art Spaces and Queer artists with Why Have There Been No Great Transgender Artists by Jeannie Tang, delivered at the Queering the Museum panel at the Brooklyn Museum (2013). Today's episode discussion is also enhanced by Marta Wiktoria Byrll's article Modern Transgender Art (2020). To no one's surprise, gender, identity, and race still deeply impacts how artists are received... And usually? It's not great! If your feminism isn't intersectional, it's trash. Find out how art schools have (d)evolved over the decades, continue to disassemble the sexism (and other toxic biases) of all art institutions, contemplate how your personal bias affects how you attribute art to artist identity, stay curious about why the Identity of the Artist is so deeply linked to the reception of the Artist, and remain frustrated over how the stagnant interpretation of visibly trans artists affects everything that they then must overcome... just to make it in the world! This is a heavy episode. And in case you're wondering: the "Genius" still does not exist.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 37: Diego Rivera: Mexico, Murals, and Men - Friends, Enemies, and Lovers: Welcome to Scorpio Season. Come one—come all—to this incredibly special episode: our one year anniversary episode! Today we talk about the incredible and tumultuous life of Diego Rivera—muralist of the people, and Frida Kahlo's other half. No High School Musical references this time, but we're so happy to have spent our first of many fantastic years with all of you! Find out the political and artistic evolution of Diego Rivera's style; discuss the problematic and frustrating nature of one man's ego; remain fascinated by Diego's commitment to being an occultist; fill in your BYWAP Lotería card for every time Steph and Elene go on tangents about episodes they SHOULD do or problematic museum behavior; and laugh as we finally—finally!—cave and mention Banksy. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 36: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon - Oh! The waters—the watersss—of Babylon. The waters that pour through the foundations of a luscious hanging garden! Where, exactly, were those gardens, you might ask? Well, consult some old-time-y writer trying to invent click-bait in the 3rd century, and you'd hear of the great stories of the Babylon empire. But, then again, almost every other city in some faraway place was Babylon, and the cite near modern-day Baghdad has never produced any record of these super fancy hanging structures... So, where were these gardens, exactly? And, what does Alexander the Great have to do with all of this? Find out where the legend of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon comes from, discuss the necessity of pursuing the Seven Wonders of the World, join your favorite hosts in yelling about the inconsistencies of the Babylonian records, and let us all plan to make a trip to our very own Wonders...King Nebuchadnezzar not included.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 35: The Love Affair of Storytelling - Welcome to the end of Spooky Season, and we hope that we move into November with safety and security. And, most importantly, we hope you can move into the holidays holding onto the stories we find comfort in. This week’s guest—the one and only T.H Ponders from Accession fame—brings us to the fireplace, and teaches us about the Ekphrastic tradition: where art tells a story, and that story becomes art. Find out why it matters that we tell stories about art; ponder with Ponders about the history of Ekphrasis; enjoy the debut of our new Inception podcast within the podcast; and cry about the days we used to be able to go to international art museums and stand for long periods of time in front of art without a care in the world.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 34: Medusa: A #MeToo Icon? - The story of Medusa is one of tragedy, heartbreak, and ultimate betrayals. Although Ovid's Metamorphosis has the hero Perseus emerging victorious, today's piece and article look at a reinterpretation of the myth—what if Medusa won the fight? And, furthermore, what happens when said reimagining becomes a powerful symbol for the #MeToo movement? Find out the story of Medusa and what inspired Luciano Garbati to create this powerful sculpture; sit in awe as Steph and Elene fundamentally disagree over this piece; contemplate the impact of the male gaze and male opinion on the female body; and, let's all agree that art critics are the most self-indulgent of us all.</image:title>

Your favorite hosts dawn our archeologist's hats, grab our baby paintbrushes and get to work exploring the fantastic ghost sites of Mohenjo-daro and Dholavira. We went back in time and found an advanced Indus River Civilization and the Harappan Civilization thriving amongst rivers, lakes, and water systems. Hell yeah. Oh! And the magnificent UNESCO site of Mohenjo-daro literally translates to Mound of the Dead Men. Find out what shenanigans led to the ultimate discovery of these cities; discover how aqueducts and water channels forged these near-Industrial trade cities; un-learn some prejudices you may have about beliefs about non-Western civilizations being extremely advanced; and, celebrate how incredibly cool the concept of j-chilling in Mesopotamia, Abu Dhabi, Minoan Crete, Ancient Egypt, and the Indus Valley during the Same Time Period.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 32: Duchamp’s Ready Made Legacy - In the spirit of Duchamp, we here at BYWAP are here to stand behind a simple truth: we don’t believe in art. We believe in artists! The horrors of War and Economic strife brought us Dada, and Dada gave us weird contemporary art that requires an art history degree to decipher. Nothing is perfect, all systems are flawed, but we’ve got all these Ready-Mades ready for mass distribution and we hope you’re ready for the CHAOS. Find out the crazy sh*t that Duchamp came up with to promote as art, criticize the nature of 20th-century politics and art styles, contextualize the development of Dadaism (and its subsequent decline), and be glad that we live in a time where we don’t have to watch the news argue over if a urinal is considered Art or not.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 31: Ukiyo-e: Art of the Floating World - Welcome to Spooky Season! As we reflect on how time and life changes, we must also stop and think about the power of cultural exchange. Arts and culture don't operate in a vacuum, and different influences can radically transform different mediums. However, today's subject is unique. For the Edo (Tokugawa) period, Japan was characterized by economic growth, strict social order, isolationist foreign policy... and wildly popular enjoyment of the arts. Ukiyo-e, then, represents the final phase of a long development of Japanese culture operating in total isolation from the rest of the world. And after two centuries of operating in a vacuum came to a dramatic close with the reopening of Japan in July 1853, the whole world changed. Find out where the concept of 'Japonisme' came from; learn how ukiyo-e developed over the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries; admire the cut-throat nature of Edo-period art markets; and, contemplate how art has the potential to transform the whole world.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 30: How to Talk About Art - Or, as our audio wizard, Julieta, puts it: Can We Offer You A Crash Course On Art in This Trying Time? Clickbait titles aside, today's episode dives into a topic so painfully overlooked by the art world. Have you ever been overwhelmed being in a gallery that you know nothing about the artist? Have you ever just been lost for words? Does talking about art make you uncomfortable? Just because you like art doesn't mean you know how to TALK about art. Over our many years deeply rooted to the art world, your favorite hosts have some tips and tricks to help you get through any museum or gallery that you find yourselves in. Remember, at the end of the day, there is no wrong way to talk about art. You belong in front of the piece—take your time with it! Find out our recap of visual literacy, gain some tools to help you be comfortable in front of art, how Elene responds to mispronunciations of her name, and why the persistence of institutions believing everyone should be an Art Historian to enjoy an art museum hurts everyone.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 29: The Woman in Gold - This week we're popping popcorn, bringing out our art law textbooks, and righting some of the wrongs of the Nazis. Tonight's Movie Night is the 2015 Historical Drama of "The Woman in Gold". Based on the incredible true story of one family's fight to reclaim stolen art, this movie centers itself around Gustav Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I"—or, "The Woman in Gold". This Helen Mirren/Ryan Reynolds film manages to make a six-year legal battle seem interesting! Join us as we look at the over-the-top nature of the painting, pine to visit Austria, critique Hollywood's penchant for stretching the truth for a Good Story(tm), and discuss how the nature of restitution is not only in the returning of taken objects... But also in the acceptance that harm has been inflicted, and responsibility must be taken.</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 28: Representation of Mental Illness in Museums - From Munch to Van Gogh, Goya to Kusama—the connection between mental illness and creativity has been a talking point of many art critics and art journals for centuries. However, the extent of that same illness being translated into museum spaces is a relatively new concept, with many museums opting to overlook (or outright deny) the impact of these diseases on artists. Join us as we read Elene's fantastic MuseumNext article, and dive into these deep and murky waters. Find out how different museums have used mental illness as conversation points, examine three different case studies of representation in exhibitions, and how representation offers more inclusive conversations to be had about such a largely overlooked topic—reducing stigma in the process!</image:title>

<image:title>Episodes - Episode 26: We Made It Up: an Introduction to Cultural Memory - There's no earthly way of knowing which direction your memories are going. And while this may not be Willy Wonka's tunnel to hell, the fluid and ever changing imagery of a river that cannot be pinned down or dominated is evocative of the nature of memories. Memory is what we make of it, and this week’s guest—Dzebo, our dear Georgian Cultural Memory Studies major—helps us get to the bottom of the tricky nature of Cultural and Collective Memory. Find out how obsessed Steph has been over the Animal Crossing bandwagon, the long-term effects of nationalistic propaganda, how different 'memories' can resonate in a society, the way that different perspectives can cohabitate without disrupting globalism, and why we can't possibly be dancer. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 25: A COVID Update - Remember back in April when we were hopeful and interested in overcoming a pandemic before summer? Remember how we thought the world could globally deal with it? Anyways. A lot has changed since our 6th episode, and it's time we updated you all with some fun, fresh (and occasionally depressing) reminders. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 24: Hagia Sophia: May She Outlive Us All - A BYWAP First: An Architecture Episode! In today's episode, we finally talk about one of the most captivating buildings in the world: the Hagia Sophia. A church, then a basilica, then a mosque, then a museum, and now a mosque again has been continuing the ebb and flow of lived history. In today's episode, we tackle the long-standing history of this magnificent monument and how it's being impacted in 2020. Join us as we celebrate They Might Be Giants, challenge neoimperialism, cry about how wonderful Byzantine Architecture, and reconsider their lives when a five-year project involves building the literal heavens. This man is the embodiment of SkillShare (and googling your way through a comprehensive liberal arts degree), and we stan. Is it cheating to use technology in art? <image:title>Episodes - Episode 20: Why Repatriate? (w/ Lindsey Anton-Wood) - Why Repatriate, you may ask? Well... How do African masks and Totem Poles in museums make you feel? Do you wonder how they got there? Would you return stolen goods, even if you think you would do a better job taking care of it? This week’s guest is the literal backbone of the show: Lindsey Anton-Wood, a Canadian studies researcher and our fabulous graphics designer. Today she helps us further last week's discussion of why (stolen) cultural objects find themselves under constant controversy. Find out why "to the victor, goes the spoils" paved the way for the looting of Black and Indigenous cultural heritage, the arguments some people have as to why objects shouldn't be returned, and how some museums are combatting Colonialism from their collections. Come sit around the academic campfire of our hearts, and join us in our article discussion of "The Trouble with (The Term) Art" by author Carolyn Dean. We love her, we love this article, we need more discussions on how to classify art. Can we talk about Art without talking about colonialism? What is Art by Intention or Art by Appropriation? Do we put too much value into our ability to define things art Art? What does that mean for us? This article broke us in many ways, but let's get into it. Find out if, like artists, podcasts are more valuable when they die; if you can pin art down long enough to give it a title; if Elene is technically European or not; and, how much art historians refuse to acknowledge the elephant in our disciplinary living room! But alas, it just also had to be associated with Ancient Rome and purity, and we've never recovered. Your host will never learn. This week, we watched BBC Four's "The History of Art in Three Colors" series, watching the "White" episode for our Movie Night....... And Booooy Howdy. To no one's surprise, the art world is genuinely appalling when you get into the nitty gritty of colorism. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 10: Édouard Manet’s Sexy Garden Time - Join us on a picnic: no clothes required! As we celebrate double digits on podcast episodes, we look at another sort of progenitor. Avant-garde artist Édouard Manet (not Monet, but he’s in here too) is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the Impressionist movement, but is that really true? This week’s episode analyzes the life & times of the artsy bourgeois, makes a hundred different references to how little French critics liked Manet’s work and takes a sabbatical to Spain to talk about light subjects... Like the Inquisition. Fuck the Establishment, y'all. Stay Safe. Don't Touch Your Face. Wash Your Hands.</image:title>

Please drink more water, you deserve it. Today's episode looks at Richard Sandell's (2003) "Museums and the combating of social inequality: roles, responsibilities, resistance" article. Find out how passionate your hosts are about the current state of museum affairs, our anime-filled pandemic plans, #MuseumsAreNotNeutral, the WILD notion that "art for art's sake" is a good enough museum/gallery model, and why we used Sandell's writing in both of our thesis'. That's right: we're watching the 2014 film Monuments Men—the Saving-Private-Ryan of art films. Join us for a boozy rambling of the most active job museum people can get, a celebration of badasses spying on Nazis, the shocking discovery of the Clooney family, the importance of culture, lots of vague references to random scenes, and our constant amazement at how much of this movie was based on true events. Things may have changed dramatically in the span of a week, but we do our best to bemoan the current state of Museum Affairs while also offering small, cultural reprieves to fill quiet panic over these upcoming months. Also featured are some wholesome friendship, COVID-19 discussions, bad jokes, #yolo mentions, and the hangups of virtual tours. Things have changed, but we're changing with it. Stay Safe. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 5: Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? (Part 2) - The only March Madness that's not getting canceled this month is the final part of our series! Today finishes our discussion of Linda Nochlin's (1971) "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" article. While we were hoping that between the parts we could resolve this whole debacle, we will just have to see if Part 2 solves it! Find out how we're planning to change the world with clout, how essential the fundamental access to education and training could make or break an artist's career, and how quick we are to aggressively callout the "Gal Pals" narrative on old-timey lesbians. And in case you're wondering: the "Genius" still does not exist. Stay Safe. Don't Touch Your Face. Wash Your Hands.</image:title>

<image:title>About - Bet You Wish This Was an Art Podcast has two hosts - Elene and Stephanie. We met while doing our Master’s together at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, and quickly realised that our love for all things art and art history was mutual. During our Master’s we shared an assignment for which we decided to create a small podcast episode. This small episode ended up being an hour long and yes, our professor had to listen to the whole thing. We had so much fun while working on this assignment that we decided to actually pursue it and make an all-out podcast, ‘cause why not? So here we are now. Scroll down to learn more about us individually.</image:title>

<image:title>About - Stephanie Antonijuan is a Spanish-American queer art and museum enthusiast and blogger from Sarasota, Florida. She has a Bachelor’s in Art History and Theory, and a Master’s in Arts and Heritage. When she’s not yelling about social inequities on the podcast, she’s probably on twitter yelling about the need for socially inclusive museum spaces. Her current home is Florida, but this world-traveller has big plans to move to faraway places. You can find her on Instagram (@thatmuseumgirl) or Twitter (@steph_ant).</image:title>

<image:title>About - Lindsey Anton-Wood wears a lot of different hats. Primarily touques. Well, actually only touques. For this podcast she wears the design touque. She also thought that this idiom would sound a whole lot better than it actually does. Hailing from Canada, she has a Bachelor’s degree in History and Canadian Studies, and a Master’s in Arts and Heritage, emphasis on the heritage. You can find her on Instagram (@lindseyantwd), LinkedIn, or on her website - lindseyantwd.ca.</image:title>
